8084 STUDIO MIX #006 BIA MARQUES /

Hello ...... Présente toi en quelques mots :

Heya! I'm Beatriz, but most people know me as DJ Bia Marques. I'm a born and
bred Rio de Janeiro girl. I started messing around with DJing and hitting the
nightlife scene back in 2014, and ever since, that's been my gig.
Besides spinning tracks, I've also gotten into organizing, curating and hosting
events both here in Rio and in São Paulo.
These days, you can catch me as a resident DJ at this sick bass/electronic music
party called Wobble, which has been going strong in Rio since 2011. Then there's
my baby, Rompiendo, a project I kicked off in 2019 and it's all about blending
latin vibes with some good funk beats right here in Rio. And most recently, in
2021, I landed a gig as resident DJ and curator for Fervo Fluxo we're all about
pumping out the best of underground funk, first starting in London and now
spreading the vibes to Paris and Italy too.

My first memory related to music goes back to when I was a kid, around 8 or 9 years old. My uncle, who was a drummer, and my grandmother would lay out pots and pans on the floor of my grandma's kitchen so I could bang on them like drums. When I got a bit older, that same uncle gave me some lessons and taught me the basics of drumming. I think that's where my passion and fascination for music and its sounds really began. During my teenage years, I was part of a band at school where I played the drums, and I also joined the school's music team.

When I started going out to parties, I waited until I turned 18 and went to one (which happened to be the Wobble party, where I'd join the team some years later).

It was because of the blends that the DJs were doing and the music style being played that it felt like a whole new world opened up in my mind. That's when I had my first insight into starting DJing.

Initially, what I always loved listening to before I started DJing was hip hop/rap
and funk, especially the Rio de Janeiro funk.

When I saw these DJs playing a style that was popular at the time, which was trap, in a way that I couldn't even begin to explain were the resident DJs at Wobble, Marginal Men, who were a duo, and DJ Rodrigo S. Maybe they were my biggest and earliest influences in the nightlife and DJing scene, and then I started discovering other artists, DJs, and producers who were playing and producing stuff that I loved to listen to. Mr. Carmack, Sango, back in the days of the Soulection crew around 2014. Later on, I discovered other amazing female DJs like DJ Cinara from São Paulo, as well as many funk producers and DJs like FP do Trem Bala, Cabelão do Turano, Iasmin Turbininha, and more.

I'd say my style nowadays is very eclectic and varied, and that's what people end
up telling me too. I can be quite versatile and put together different sets for
different occasions and parties. I can confidently say that I've never repeated any
DJ set! Hahahaha
So, while I started out listening to hip hop/rap, funk, trap, and their subgenres,
which I still love playing and listening to today, I ended up delving deeper into
exploring many other rhythms. I love doing musical research and discovering new
styles. It all depends on my mood and what I enjoy listening to during certain
periods of my life. Nowadays, I find myself playing a lot more funk, but I've been
diving into Afrofunk as well, which is a genre that has been growing here in the
baile funks in Rio. It's a mix of afrobeats and funk, whether it's acapella or funk
beats. So, I'm always doing research and looking for sounds that please me and
that I know I'll be comfortable and happy playing and sharing with people on the
dance floors too.

In my humble opinion, in a cliché way, without music, nothing exists. Everything is
somehow connected to sound. I believe that the fashion world has always been
intertwined with music, but nowadays, even more so due to the variety and
multiculturalism of both scenes. It's amazing to see, for example, funk being
played and disseminated in the biggest fashion shows by top brands. I believe
that every day, music is reaching even more distant places and bringing together
different cultures and people.

For a while now, I've been wanting to dive into the music production world. I'll
admit, I've been dragging my feet a bit, but it's a project that's been on my mind
for some time, and I'm eager to put it into action. I believe that as someone
who's passionate about music and what I do, production will be a really
interesting addition. I've been traveling a lot on tour with Fervo Fluxo across
Europe, and the goal this year is to take the party to more venues in Europe and
also to Brazil!

I'm a huge fan and listener of Brazilian artists and singers too, with a lot of
different genres! And I've got two songs that have been on repeat in my headphones since they
came out, they are:
DJAVAN – Luccas Carlos feat. Maui and Francci
Jade – Maui feat. Afrodite BXD and CL fez o Beat

Crazy things happening to DJs might sound normal, right? Haha!
But perhaps the craziest was in the early years when I was just starting out DJing.
I still had a day job as a hotel receptionist. One day, I was DJing at a club, and I
accidentally tripped over the DJ booth's monitor, which was on the floor. I fell
pretty badly and ended up fracturing my elbow!! I was in a cast for nearly 6
weeks, got fired from my receptionist job, and then spent months trying to
recover the movements in my broken arm hahahaha .
I had to do a lot of physiotherapy and work hard to cover the costs from that
day! Hahahahaha
But everything turned out fine after quite some time and it was fate telling me to
quit my job and truly pursue a career as a DJ.
